A Truly Bespoke Service

As a tuition agency run by experienced tutors and teachers we believe in giving support to both parents: to keep you informed and equipped, as well as to tutors: to make sure they have the best resources, knowledge and approach.

Above all we are proud of our local, personal approach. We work hard to know and contribute to the schools and community in our area and we try and ensure, particularly through our system of assessments, that all of our clients get the opportunity to come to the office and meet the team in person.

It all starts with a Personal Recommendation

Most agencies are adept at listening to your requirements and providing a tutor with qualifications that match. However, finding true chemistry between a child and their tutor is about much more than the right degree or even a proven track record.

When personality and teaching style is so crucial - to get the best out of a student, to make sure they enjoy themselves, and to engage with the subject - then you want an agency who takes the time to meet and assess every student and an agency who knows their group of tutors inside out.

In an industry where it has become the norm for parents to take the burden of trying out multiple tutors and choosing themselves, even from "reputable agencies", we are incredibly proud that our method has been proven to provide recommendations that stick first time.

Our Free Assessments are all conducted by our extremely experienced founder and director of studies. They focus on four key areas with the intention of ensuring compatibility both personally and educationally:

  • Academic Ability
  • Potential
  • Learning Style
  • Personality

We follow up with a comprehensive written report at which point parents are invited to discuss their requirements without any obligation of engaging a tutor.

Finally we will meet as an office and discuss the best approach to take and the right tutor to recommend. Once you've been set up with a tutor we will let them contact you and monitor progress closely.

We have always put a premium on our personal approach and that is why we offer free individual assessments for every student who comes to the agency. Meeting our students and working closely with each of our small band of tutors means we can genuinely match tutors based on personality, goals, ability and learning style.

Our 25 minute free assessments are the magic ingredient we use to ensure you find the tutor who will be able to get the very best out of your son or daughter.

Everything starts with a chat, either over the phone or in person - we're looking forward to hearing from you.

The 25 minute assessment is conducted like a mini tutorial and we aim to make it fun and engaging for the student. These take place either at our office in Barnes or via video call.

Want a little extra?
Try our Baseline Test to get a full breakdown of your son or daughter's academic potential.

Baseline Test

The Baseline can be taken either 18 months, 12 months or 6 months prior to the exams, so we have different testing points throughout the year.

The core test looks at a student's academic abilities in maths, English and reasoning but the format of the test is different from what you can expect in a typical mock exam as we are also looking to gauge a student's potential and learning style - not just their current academic ability.

The test:

  • Total of 2.5 hours with a 20 minute break.
  • The English component is 50 minutes long and will test comprehension and composition skills.
  • The maths paper is 50 minutes long and will test core skills as well as worded and puzzle questions.
  • There is a 30 minute reasoning paper split between VR (verbal) and NVR (non verbal) questions.

What we offer:

  • Our report will comment on a student's current preparedness and suggest a programme of study with individually formulated areas of focus.
  • We will recommend target schools, reading lists and construct a practice plan with recommended resources.
  • Scripts are returned annotated with in depth comments and notes.
  • Optional face to face consultation to receive specific feedback (additional fee).

Each test has a 20 minute break in the middle and drinks and a snack will be proved. Students are welcome to bring their own stationery, but this is also provided if needed.

When placing your order, don't forget that Torchlight Members receive a significantly discounted rate - just enter your code (see our Newsletter or contact the office) at the checkout stage.
